Why "DIVA" is my signature piece

The story of "DIVA" is a very special and moving one. I saw God display his power in a way I'd never seen before. A friend suggested that I compete in the Miss Texas Southern University pageant.

I knew I had what it took to win. So, I became a Miss TSU contestant. While preparing for the talent portion of the competition I wrote "DIVA". I wanted to do a dramatic piece on strong black women and didn't find anything that suited me. So I decided to write something. I wanted to write something that described me and other strong women I loved and admired. My first thought was of my mother-Sandra Francis. She's a strong and beautiful woman. She's tough and opinionated, yet loving and kind. She ain't scared of nobody on "two legs or four" as she says, and maintains high morals and standards. The list of her attributes goes on and on, and I wanted this piece to celebrate strong women like my mama and the women in my family. After my initial performance of "DIVA" at the pageant, I received a standing ovation from the crowd and went on to win the pageant! The same people I thought would laugh at me, cheered me on and supported me! Only God can do that!

Thanks to His awesome power, I broke barriers and became the first plus sized queen in the 51 year history of one of the largest historically black universities in the United States! Since my win in 1998, several other plus-sized women have competed and some have won the pageant. This experience always reminds me of what God can do in our lives if we are obedient, have faith, and trust Him.

"DIVA" is a poem that describes the modern day "Proverbs 31" woman. A beautiful woman, inside and out, who is confident and assured with a no nonsense attitude. A godly woman who knows her worth and possesses strong values and morals. An intelligent woman who possesses her own mind and rejects passive stereotypes of weak women. A "nervy so and so" that doesn't know a thing about "a woman's place". And what do you call this smart, fabulous, beautiful, classy, intelligent sista? What else could a woman like this be? A DIVA!
